Hedging Varieties

Common / Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus)

A fast-growing, dense evergreen with large glossy green leaves. Ideal for privacy hedging in larger spaces and tolerates trimming well. Very popular across Galway and Mayo for rural and urban gardens.

Portuguese Laurel (Prunus lusitanica)

Elegant and formal, Portuguese Laurel features deep green foliage and reddish stems. A more compact alternative to Common Laurel – perfect for neat, stylish hedging in Clare and Roscommon gardens.

Leylandii (Leyland Cypress)

One of the fastest-growing hedges available. Leylandii forms a tall, dense evergreen screen quickly – popular with homeowners seeking instant privacy in Galway and Mayo.

Escallonia

Glossy evergreen foliage with pink or red flowers in summer. Escallonia thrives in milder, coastal climates and makes a colourful flowering hedge in Clare and coastal Galway.

Photinia ‘Red Robin’

An eye-catching evergreen with brilliant red new growth that matures to glossy green. Ideal for sheltered gardens where it can thrive without strong wind exposure. A fantastic feature hedge in milder, more protected areas of Galway, Mayo, and Clare.

Photinia ‘Carre Rouge’

A more compact version of Red Robin, with intense red spring foliage. Ideal for smaller gardens or low decorative hedging – now trending in urban Galway and Mayo gardens.

Genolia Laurel

Genolia Laurel

A columnar, upright-growing variety perfect for narrow spaces. Offers full privacy with less spread – excellent for tight borders in town gardens across the west.

Lonicera nitida hedging
Box Honeysuckle

Lonicera nitida (Box Honeysuckle)

A compact, quick-growing shrub with tiny leaves – ideal for formal shapes and clipped low hedges. A great alternative to Boxwood in town and country gardens.

Fagus sylvatica
Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica)

Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica)

A deciduous hedge that holds onto its leaves in winter, turning coppery brown. Adds a classic, structured look – often used in traditional gardens around Clare and Galway.

Copper / Purple Beech

Deep purple spring leaves turn rich bronze in autumn. Stunning in contrast to green planting and forms a striking formal hedge. A favourite with landscapers across the west of Ireland.

Buxus (Boxwood) hedging
Buxus (Boxwood) hedging

Buxus (Boxwood)

A classic choice for low, neat hedging or topiary. Slow-growing and tidy, Box is perfect for paths, parterres and borders in smaller gardens across Galway and Mayo.

Ilex Crenata (Japanese Holly)

A Box alternative with better disease resistance. Ilex Crenata is ideal for compact hedging and formal borders, especially in shaded or wetter areas.

Elaeagnus x ebbingei

A tough, wind-tolerant evergreen with striking silvery-green leaves and small, highly fragrant flowers in autumn. Perfect for coastal gardens and exposed sites across the west of Ireland, especially in Clare, Connemara, and open countryside. Grows quickly and makes an excellent screening hedge.

Griselinia hedging

A popular evergreen hedge with soft, glossy light green leaves that creates a clean, modern look. Griselinia is fast-growing, salt-tolerant, and thrives in milder coastal areas, making it ideal for gardens in Clare, Galway Bay, and sheltered spots across the west of Ireland. It forms a dense, attractive hedge with minimal maintenance.

Cotoneaster (franchetii, lacteus & horizontalis)

Cotoneasters make attractive, hardy hedging with white flowers and red berries that support wildlife. Franchetii and lacteus are great for informal evergreen screens in windy or coastal areas, while horizontalis works well as low, spreading ground cover or edging. All are low-maintenance and pollinator-friendly.
