What Is Bare Root Hedging?
Bare root hedging consists of young hedge plants supplied with no soil around their roots. These plants are lifted from the ground while dormant (typically November to March) and should be planted soon after purchase.
Advantages:
- Excellent value – usually the most cost-effective way to plant a hedge.
- Lightweight and easy to handle.
- Strong root establishment once planted in winter.
- Low environmental impact – minimal packaging and plastic use.
Bare root plants are perfect for larger planting projects or when you want to establish a hedge economically and efficiently.
What Is Rootball Hedging?
Rootball hedging consists of more mature plants that are grown in the ground and lifted with their roots intact inside a ball of soil, wrapped in hessian or netting to keep the roots protected.
Advantages:
- Larger, more established plants for an instant hedge effect.
- Better survival rate for certain species that don’t transplant well bare root.
- Can be planted during the same dormant season (roughly November to March).
Rootball plants are ideal if you want a quicker impact or prefer heavier, more established plants.
